Almost every woman has felt so tired that she wanted to cry at some point in her life. For other women, however, and for a number of reasons - including menopause, caring for a newborn, working strange hours, chronic worry, and poverty, to mention a few - fatigue is a regular, rather than an occasional, issue.

Stimulants do not actually provide us extra energy, despite the fact that they are what many women resort to when they are fatigued. Stimulants provide us with illusory vigor, leaving us tired on deeper levels. To be sure, one more cup of coffee, one more soft drink, and one more shock of fear boosts vitality. However, these decisions drain our bones of minerals, weaken our inner energy, and hinder us from getting genuinely peaceful, restorative sleep. Herbal stimulants, such as cayenne and guarana, are also stimulants. They overwork us and harm our long-term health.

Is it possible to increase energy in a healthy and effective way? Grandmother Growth, my guide, provided me with some suggestions on how to support myself when I'm exhausted. And I gathered the greatest cures I know, as well as the knowledge of my Wise Woman friends, so you can assist yourself when words fail you.

Fall into my arms and sleep,” offers Grandmother Growth. “You don’t have to make things happen; they will happen on their own. Let me hold you. Let go. Don’t resist. Rest. You are working hard. You are delving deep and changing yourself. Of course, you are tired. Change is hard work. Rest in my strong arms. Let go. Give your weariness to me. Let go of all that worries you. Surrender yourself to my strength. Take courage from me. Let me support you. Let me ease you. Let go.”

Extreme fatigue indicates a profound need to do nothing. Ask family and friends to give you a day totally off … and take it! Barricade yourself in your room if need be (or, like the cartoon character Sylvia, in the bathroom).

1. BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Internal processes such as puberty, parenthood, menopause, or any other significant shift in your life need massive quantities of energy. Even if you consume high-quality foods and use your energy correctly, you may still feel excessively weary. Many cultures provide babies and mothers with a peaceful, alone month or more, enable menopausal women to retire for a year or more as they change, and provide time off from responsibilities to bereaved parents/partners/children/friends. If yours doesn't, or if you can't, be kind to yourself.

Give yourself a break by taking a 60-second break every hour. Breath deeply, stretch, and sip a glass of water or herbal infusion. Schedule a regular time each day to meditation or snooze. Small frequent rests are more beneficial than an extra hour of sleep; nonetheless, do both if possible.

Set aside an hour each week to treat yourself to something luxurious: a lengthy soak in a hot bath, a manicure, or a walk alone in a beautiful location. You will have more energy to give to others if you nourish yourself.

Once a month, treat yourself to a massage. (It doesn't have to break the bank; locate someone ready to trade for a talent or commodity you have.) A skilled massage relieves stress, allowing you to get more out of your sleep and relaxation, releasing more energy and allowing you to begin the upward spiral into improved vitality.

"Lower your expectations." Though tough to hear, this counsel has been one of the most essential guides for me in selecting a life that excites and energizes me. It influenced my decision to leave the floor unswept, the dishes unwashed, and the bed unmade while I gardened, studied, or just went for a stroll in the woods. I have a lot more energy when I do the things I want to accomplish. What are you doing that saps your energy and erodes your enjoyment of life? Find a means to quit, or at least reduce the amount of time you spend on it.

2. THE BENEFITS OF FATIGUE, LAZINESS, LETHARGY, AND PROCRASTINATION

Laziness has proven to be my finest efficiency advisor; lethargy has kept me from taking dumb chances, and procrastination has helped me identify more efficient methods to progress. Love and respect your exhaustion for allowing you to preserve energy and find innovative new methods to complete the same old tasks.

3. SEAWEED

Seaweeds of all varieties aid in energy restoration by supporting the neurological, immunological, and hormonal systems. Make eating seaweed as a green vegetable a habit at least once a week. Kelp in oatmeal, wakame in beans, kombu in soups, hijiki salads, toasted dulse, sea palm fronds, and deep-fried nori are all delicious!

4. ROOTS

Obtain down and get grounded energy from roots to combat that tired-everyday sensation. Try ginseng, Siberian ginseng, yellow dock, or dandelion root tinctures. 10-20 drops of any one root, taken with meals, is a dosage.

5. TIRED BLOOD?

If you need additional iron, consider eating a tablespoon of molasses or taking a dropperful of yellow dock tincture several times a day.

6. TURN IT UP! DO NOT SIT THERE!

Energy attracts other energy. Start by assuming a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart and relaxed knees. Swing your arms in a wide, sweeping motion. Allow your shoulders and hips to move as you rotate your upper body. Give your arms room to swing. Continue for about another minute. After that, rock your entire pelvis—including your tailbone—forward, back, and forth for at least a minute.

7. GREEN IS THE COLOR OF PLANT ENERGY

The plants with the darkest green provide you with the greatest vitality. A daily cup of nettle infusion boosts energy without wiring your nerves. Nettle boosts the adrenals, allowing you to withstand more stress with less injury. It also helps your immune system.

To make it:

  • Put one ounce of dried nettle leaf in a quart jar.

  • Fill to the top with boiling water.

  • Cap tightly and steep at least four hours (overnight is fine).

  • Strain and drink.

  • Refrigerate the remainder and consume within 36 hours.

(Leftovers may be used as a hair rinse or fertilizer for your houseplants.) I drink several quarts of nettle infusion every week. It helps me have the energy to teach all day and write for hours each evening.

8. OATSTRAW

Oatstraw infusion gives you incredible energy the next day, especially if you've had a tough day emotionally. Oatstraw calms the nerves, lowering anxiety and boosting our ability to handle ambiguity. Like the nettle infusion, add a full ounce of oat straw to a quart of boiling water. It's acceptable to consume it hot, cold, with honey, miso, or any other addition (juice, coffee, whiskey). Keep the infusion chilled after it has fermented for 4 to 8 hours, even if you don't get a chance to remove the plant debris.

9. EAT MORE

When you can't eat, you get more tired. Remember that the wise women were the elderly wives if this looks like an old wives' tale. It is, however, the most recent scientific theory.) Eat one absolutely outstanding meal every day and high-quality snacks at regular intervals.

Contrary to appearances, St. Joan's wort (Hypericum) tincture boosts vigor while calming the nerves. It is advised to take 25–30 drops many times a day, especially before night. You'll get better sleep, experience fewer pains, and awaken with more energy and a happier outlook on life.

Warming herbs like ginger and cinnamon boost vitality (but may increase hot flashes, too). Make a tea with 1 cup/250 ml boiling water and 1/2-1 teaspoon (1-2 grams) of any of these powders.

Really weary women need to eat more calories—more fat—in their diets, and it's best if those calories come from foods high in vitamin E naturally occurring in them, such as avocados, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, tahini, and olive oil. Among herbs rich in vitamin E are seaweeds, dandelion, watercress, nettle, and seaweed tea. B vitamins boost energy. Whey, salmon, organ meats, avocados, sweet potatoes, whole grains, and egg yolks are a few foods that contain them. Excellent sources of B vitamins include oat straw and nettle infusions, red clover flower infusion, peppermint leaves, and fenugreek seeds.

Fatigue is a result of low potassium, iron, and iodine levels. Excellent sources of potassium include celery, cabbage, seaweed, nettle infusion, and red clover infusion. Excellent sources of iron include molasses, chocolate, seaweed, nettle infusion, and dandelion leaves. Seaweed is the best source of iodine, although sea salt, mushrooms, and greens from gardens that used seaweed as fertilizer are other major sources.

10. AVOID

On days when they've eaten frozen or uncooked food, some women say they feel more exhausted. According to traditional Chinese medicine, consuming cold or raw meals, particularly cold beverages, and raw juices, causes weariness because you must use energy to warm the food before you can digest it. Your demand for well-cooked meals, such as nutritious herbal infusions and therapeutic soups, increases with how exhausted you are.

I abstain from any blue-green algae, spirulina, green barley powder, and wheatgrass juice. All are far more expensive, more challenging to manufacture at home, and more likely to be sold through multi-level marketing than nettle infusion, which is also the most nourishing.

Future weariness will be worsened by "energy-producing" meals, substances, or herbal supplements like coffee, guarana, caffeinated beverages, excessive black tea, or chocolate.

Rest your head down on me,” crones Grandmother Growth. “For this moment, rest in me. Let the energy of the earth infuse you. Let my energy carry you. Let yourself be enough. Let go.”
